Pengertian Kepemimpinan dan pemimpin (leadership and leader)

Dari akar kata “pimpin” kita mengenal kata “pemimpin” dan “kepemimpinan”. Dalam Ensiklopedi Umum, kata “kepemimpinan” ditafsirkan sebagai hubungan yang erat antara seorang dan sekelompok manusia karena adanya kepentingan bersama; hubungan Itu ditandai oleh tingkah laku yang tertuju dan terbimbing dari manusia yang seorang itu. Manusia atau orang ini biasanya disebut yang memimpin atau pemimpin, sedangkan kelompok manusia yang mengikutinya disebut yang dipimpin.

Dalam Webster’s New World Dictionary of the American Language

leadership adalah the position or guidance of a leader atau “the ability to lead”, dan

leader adalah “a person or thing that leades; directing, commanding, or guiding head, as a group or activity”.
Dalam buku psikologi antara lain dikatakan bahwa

“leadership is a relation of an individual to a group, established in the interests of achieving ,some end”.

Dalam buku Foundations of Psychology itu dinyatakan bahwa seorang pemimpin yang sukses tergantung dua syarat dalam garis besarnya.

1. pemimpin itu “must share the values, attitudes and interests of the group. This psychological similarity is necessary for the identification of the followers with the leaders”.

2. bahwa kualitas pemimpin itu lebih tinggi dari para pengikutnya, akan tetapi tetap bersifat komunikatif dengan yang dipimpinnya.

Para penulis buku kepemimpinan di Indonesia, antara lain seperti Drs. Wahyo Sumidjo, Prof. Pamudji, Ir. Suyamto, dan Iain-lain, dalam gar is besarnya membahas tentang definisi kepemimpinan. Mereka telah mengutip dan atau menterjemahkan hasil rumusan para tokoh senior asing dalam hal ini, misalnya seperti:

Menurut Ralph Mtogdill (1950), Leadership is a process of ipfluencing the activities of an organized group in its task of goal setting and goal achievement”.
Menurut Fred E, Fiedler (1967),“Leadership is the process of influencing group activities toward goal setting and goal achievement”.
Menurut Martin J. Gannon (1982), “Leadership is the ability of a superior to influence the behavior of subordinates; one of the behavioral in organization”.
Menurut Paul Hersey, Kenneth H. Blanchard (1982) Leadership is the process of influacing the activities of an individual or a group in efforts toward goal achievement in a given situation”.
Menurut George R. Terry (1972),“Leadership is the relationship in which one person, or the leader, influences others to work together willingly on related tasks to attain that which the leader desires”.

Menurut, R.D. Agarwal (1982), “Leadership is the art of influencing others to direct their will, abilities and efforts to the achievement of leader’s goals. In the context of organization, leadership lies in influencing individual and group effort toward the optimum achievement of organizational objectives”.

Menurut Harold Korntz & Cirill O’Donnell (1976),“Leaderships in the art of inducing subordinates to accomplish their assignment with zeal and confidence”.
