leadership adalah the position or guidance of a leader atau “the ability to lead”, dan
leader adalah “a person or thing that leades; directing, commanding, or guiding head, as a group or activity”.

Dalam buku Foundations of Psychology itu dinyatakan bahwa seorang pemimpin yang sukses tergantung dua syarat dalam garis besarnya.
1. pemimpin itu “must share the values, attitudes and interests of the group. This psychological similarity is necessary for the identification of the followers with the leaders”.
2. bahwa kualitas pemimpin itu lebih tinggi dari para pengikutnya, akan tetapi tetap bersifat komunikatif dengan yang dipimpinnya.
